A front axle nut (sometimes called a drive shaft nut, hub nut, or CV axle nut) is the large fastener that secures the front drive shaft (CV axle) into the wheel hub assembly of the car.
This nut is part of the drivetrain and suspension system, not the wheel fastening system — so it’s not the same as wheel lug nuts. The wheel lug nuts hold the wheel to the rim; the axle nut holds the axle shaft to the hub and bearing assembly so engine power can be transmitted to the wheel.
It is critical for safety and drivetrain integrity.
✔ Located behind the front wheel, at the center of the hub (behind wheel lug nuts).
✔ Secures the CV axle shaft inside the hub assembly.
✔ Ensures correct bearing preload (so the wheel spins smoothly without play).
✔ Prevents the axle from moving in/out under torque.
